Model History: The Datsun 240Z, launched in 1970, represented a seismic shift in the sports car landscape, offering European-style performance and aesthetics at an accessible price point that fundamentally challenged the established order. Designed under the direction of Yoshihiko Matsuo with input from Albrecht Goertz, the 240Z combined a potent 2.4-liter inline-six engine producing 151 horsepower with independent rear suspension and a lightweight unibody construction that delivered exceptional handling dynamics. This formula proved revolutionary, as the Z-car offered performance comparable to more expensive British and Italian rivals while maintaining Japanese reliability and build quality that its European competitors often lacked. By 1972, the 240Z had already established itself as a dominant force in both showrooms and on racetracks, with SCCA victories validating its sporting credentials. The '72 model year marked the final evolution of the original S30 chassis before emissions regulations began to dilute performance in subsequent years, making these early cars particularly coveted among purists. Production totaled approximately 160,000 units for the entire 240Z run, with the clean lines, long hood proportions, and mechanical simplicity creating a template that influenced sports car design for decades. The 240Z's impact extended far beyond sales figures—it proved that affordable sports cars could deliver genuine performance while remaining practical daily drivers, establishing Datsun as a serious player in the enthusiast market and paving the way for the entire Z lineage that continues today.

Other Notable Features or Functions:
Owned since 2017. The car is in great running condition, with no oil leaks, burning oil or any overheating. Since I’ve owned it I have always kept it in a climate controlled garage, as I believe the previous owner did, and prior to that it was a west coast car. The engine runs nice and strong and the transmission was rebuilt about a year ago. No issues with grinds or getting into any gear. The clutch grabs nicely. It still has the original 4 speed manual. There are many upgrades and maintenance to the car in my ownership - I’ll do my best to list them all here. This includes a lot of suspension and brake upgrades from T3 (Techno Toy Tuning) that dramatically improved the handling, driveability, braking and safety of the car: Upgrades: - Full Evolved Front Coilovers with Bolt-On Camber Plates - Z Evolved Rear Coilover Conversion, Koni - Z Bolt-On Camber Plates - 240Z Rear Big Brake Kit, Slotted - GTX2 Front Lower Control Arms - Z Rear Lower Control Arms - 4-lug Hub Conversion, Long Racing Stubs - Drop Mounts & Dog Bone Combo - Mustache Bar, R180 - Z Front Swaybar, Suspension Techniques - Z Rear Swaybar - Protean Total Bushing Kit - Z Outer and Inner Tie Rods - Front and Rear Tow Hooks - Twice Pipes Exhaust - MSA 3-2 Coated Header - 17” Rota RKR Wheels, staggered with 8.5” in front and 9.5” rear - Cosmetic upgrades include accents like the bumpers, rear spoiler, door handle covers Maintenance: - Carbs were completely rebuilt around 2019. - Most of the fuel system has been replaced at some point. Tank was dropped and cleaned, new fuel lines and fuel pump. - New ignition coil - Transmission was rebuilt by New York Transmission Group late 2024 - Toyo Proxes all corners with a ton of wear left - see photos - New clutch assembly, pressure plate and throw out bearing - New battery Overall for a 50+ year old car, it is really good condition for its age, with many upgrades. I would like to see the car go to a good home to someone that will enjoy it as much as I did. It is not cosmetically perfect — there are some bubbles in the paint (it was painted black at some point - not sure by who - it was originally orange). The interior is original and shows wear — with the typical cracked dash and all. Do not expect a fully restored car. I’ve loved this car since the day I picked it up and it’s always a joy to drive. I am selling it as I recently purchased another sports car and unfortunately one has to go.
