Why It's Curated: This 1966 Ford Bronco is for sale in Marin CA. This first-generation Bronco represents a comprehensive restoration with a recently rebuilt 302 V8 just 600 miles ago. The extensive recent work includes a complete engine refresh with new head gasket, water pump, radiator, and exhaust system, plus a modern disc brake conversion on all four wheels. The striking gunmetal grey paint was professionally applied in 2021, complemented by custom black leather interior with red stitching and power windows. While the 5" lift limits highway use, this Bronco delivers authentic off-road capability with locking differentials and 32" tires for serious trail adventures.

Model History: Ford's original Bronco debuted in 1966 as a direct response to International's successful Scout and Jeep's CJ series, representing Ford's first serious entry into the compact 4x4 market. Developed under the guidance of product planner Paul G. Axelrad and engineer Donald Frey, the Bronco featured a purpose-built ladder frame chassis with a 92-inch wheelbase, independent front suspension, and Ford's proven 170-cubic-inch inline-six engine. Unlike its body-on-frame competitors, the early Bronco offered three distinct body styles—wagon, pickup, and roadster—positioning it as both a utilitarian workhorse and recreational vehicle. The first-generation Bronco's engineering emphasized simplicity and durability, with a part-time Dana 20 transfer case, manual locking front hubs, and robust Dana axles front and rear. Its compact dimensions and relatively lightweight construction gave it superior maneuverability compared to full-size trucks, while the optional 289 V8 (introduced in 1967) provided genuine performance capability. Production totaled just 23,776 units in the inaugural 1966 model year, making these early examples increasingly significant as the foundation of Ford's SUV legacy and highly sought-after by collectors who recognize their pivotal role in establishing the compact utility vehicle segment.
